Teaching kids to wash hands, teaching kids to clean up, teaching kids to dress themselves and other important daily tasks can be difficult for children with autism specifically to master. Today’s video is all about how to teach self care skills to children with autism, but these techniques can really be used for anyone. We’re going to mainly focus on task analysis teaching, and how to set up activity schedules to help your child or client with autism remember the steps when teaching routines.

Not only do these techniques help children learn routines, but it can also be an effective tool in teaching independence. Teaching kids self care skills allow them to do things by themselves and not rely on you, the parent, for every task in a routine. As you may know, my goal is to allow each child with autism to reach their fullest potential to be as safe, happy and independent as possible, and teaching independent behaviors is part of that. And it’s not too difficult! If you can set up a picture activity schedule in a little booklet like I describe in this video, you’re well on your way.
