Keeping kids busy at home can be difficult, especially if you’re not sure what they enjoy doing. Activities to keep kids busy and happy can be hard to come across even more so if you don’t have any data. One of the principles I teach in my online courses, and that I stress a lot about in these weekly video blogs, is data collection. Giving kids with autism choices at games and different activities and then simultaneously taking data on how your child or client is interacting with and feeling about the specific activity are vital to making a plan and keeping engagement high. Otherwise, decision making for kids with autism becomes almost random at times.

In today’s video blog I’m providing some tips and strategies for things to do to keep kids busy, and how to effectively take data. When you engage with kids with autism, you want to either be using some sort of tracking form or jotting down notes about how the activity is affecting the child. I’ll be showing you a form that we use at home with my son Lucas who has autism too. I’ll also show you how you can use choice boards and choice books to hold autism activities and help your child or client pick the thing they’d like to do. Note that for my early intervention professionals out there, these same strategies can also be used to understand how to keep your students engaged in the classroom too.
