Knife Knowledge: Repairing a scratch on the Urasuki of your single bevel knife.

I did make a mistake and called at the wrong word. I apologize! I meant to call it the Urasuki and instead I ended up calling it the Uraoshi. Sometimes you just get lost in Terminology.

It's easy to do, many of us have, it's to be expected, made this mistake! You've purchased a single bevel knife. You're trying to learn how to sharpen it. You slip up and make a mistake. You need to to know how to fix it. This Fugubiki is in many ways a lot like a Yunagiba or Deba or Tsuba. It has a hollow grind on the back. This is achieved with the grinding wheel we are used to seeing in a traditional Japanese blacksmith workshop. A lot of the time, he would just have to send it off to be repaired. This is a way for you to do this at home. I would still always recommend that you have the grind put back by a knife maker if possible. If it's just cosmetic then this will be a nice way to recover. I was fascinated to learn it and as you will see, it turns out amazing. If you are a Whetstone user, this will be important to you. Many can fix this with a belt sander. Here, we use sandpaper and a cylindrical object to mimic the shape of the concave/hollow ground backside of the knife. I will provide a link below to the original knife.
