Heute sind wir unterwegs in einer verlassenen Irrenanstalt und begeben uns auf Spurensuche einer grausamen Vergangenheit …

Die Geschichte des Gebäudes beginnt im Jahr 1871, wo es ursprünglich noch als Krankenhaus diente, das von einer Wohltätigkeitsorganisation geleitet wurde. Irgendwann wurde aus dem Krankenhaus eine Nervenheilanstalt und am Tag ihrer Eröffnung konnte sie die stolze Anzahl von ZWEI Patienten vorweisen – ein Mann und eine Frau! Im Laufe ihrer ca. 100-jährigen Geschichte sollte die Anstalt Tausende von Patienten beherbergen.

Mit seiner Vielzahl an unterschiedlichen Gebäuden war die Anstalt quasi eine eigene Stadt in der Stadt und beschäftigte neben Ärzten und Krankenschwestern auch Köche, Bäcker, Schneider, Maurer und Metzger. Zu ihren Hochzeiten war die Klinik mit 1800 Patienten belegt – bei einem Personal von 300.

Am 13. Mai 1978 wurde im italienischen Parlament das Gesetz 180 für die Reform der Psychiatrie verabschiedet, welche unter anderem das Ende der geschlossenen Anstalten in ganz Italien vorschrieb. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren hier im Manicomio noch 900 Patienten untergebracht, mit dem Inkrafttreten des Gesetzes gab es ab sofort keine Aufnahmen mehr, sondern nur noch Entlassungen. Es dauerte jedoch bis Dezember 1999, bevor die letzten verbliebenen Patienten – 5 Frauen – entlassen wurden und sich die Tore der Nervenheilanstalt für immer schlossen.

The history of the building begins in 1871, when it originally served as a hospital run by a charity. Eventually, the hospital became a mental hospital and on its opening day, it had the proud number of TWO patients - a man and a woman! Over the course of its roughly 100-year history, the institute was to house thousands of patients.

With its large number of different buildings, the asylum was virtually a city of its own within the city and employed not only doctors and nurses but also cooks, bakers, tailors, masons and butchers. At its peak, the clinic was occupied by 1800 patients - with a staff of 300.

On May 13, 1978, the Italian Parliament adopted the Law 180 for the Reform of Psychiatry, which - among other things - stipulated the closure of mental hospitals throughout Italy. At this time, there were still 900 patients here in the Manicomio. However, it lasted until December 1999, before the last remaining patients - 5 women - were dismissed and the gates of the mental hospital closed forever.
