How I Treat My Houseplants for SPIDER MITES | Plant Chores | Care Routine + Tips | Vlog

Pests are the bane of my existence ☠️

I’m pretty selective on how I use pesticides in my home because I have young children. Neem oil is organic and the specific diatomaceous earth I use is food-grade and natural. While I found that neem is not the best when it comes to treating fungus gnats (see below for what I use for fungus gnats), when it comes to those pesky white spider mites and other pests, it’s 👌.

Here’s my full treatment for treating indoor houseplant pests like spider mites, thrips, and mealy bugs:

1. Bathe plants in an insecticidal soap solution
2. Shower the leaves
3. Spray with DE
4. Reapply insecticidal soap spray and/or DE every 3 days until the infestation is gone (shower leaves afterward)
Note: Keep plants out of direct light for several hours after applying neem oil to prevent burn (or use in the evening).

The use of diatomaceous earth was sort of the cherry on top of everything. When wet, DE is ineffective, but once it dries, it regains its properties and works by puncturing the exoskeleton of pests and dehydrating them to ☠️. Using a wet application for the DE works really well because you can get it onto the undersides of leaves as opposed to just sprinkling the powder form directly onto plants (and risk inhaling it).

While not shown in this specific video, to treat for fungus gnats, I use BTI drops in my watering can and with caution, I use systemic granules in the soil.
