IIT prof's message to parents of college students

In this video, I discuss some points which will help parents to understand the difficulties faced by their college-going children.

1. The importance of being aware and involved in the overall activities (both academic and non-academic) of their children without falling into the temptation of helicopter parenting.

2. The difference in the goals of the students during JEE and after JEE. Before JEE there was one single goal. After JEE, at an institute there is a wide variety of options to choose one's goal from. Parents need to help their children navigate the uncertainties and the confusion.

3. The education system at an institute is completely different from the regimented style of "teaching" which coaching institutes pursue. It is to be expected that students will have difficulty in adapting to this different style. Parents can help their children to appreciate that this is the real style of teaching and that the regimented style of teaching is not the natural order! What is required is to inculcate a sense of responsibility to complete one's own tasks and further one's own progress.

4. If students get interested in extra-curricular activities, parents should not take an antagonistic stand. They should try to understand the motivations of the student and discuss with them how they plan to handle their academic side-by-side. They should try to make their children feel that they are on their team.
