The focus of the genre is on the growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. The main character is usually male, around mid-teen and the story is sometimes told in the form of a flashback. But Lady Bird provides a unique perspective on the genre, far beyond the fact that the main character is female and that the movie takes place in the distant past of 2002.
