Luigi Legnani’s 36 Caprices op. 20 is a collection of short character pieces written in all 12 major and minor keys. Being a close friend of Niccolo Paganini, it is probable that Legnani was inspired by Paganini’s 24 Caprices for violin and wrote his own for guitar. With a diverse musical background including classical guitar, violin, and opera, Legnani uses elements of many styles of music in his Caprices.
