The control pin #5 of the 555 timer connects to the internal resistor voltage divider that sets the trigger and threshold pin voltages. But either putting resistance between the control pin and positive supply or negative (ground) supply rail, you can alter the trigger and threshold voltages.

I demonstrate this by using my pocket oscilloscope to watch the capacitor voltage threshold voltages change while the 555 timer is in astable mode.
