Here’s how much it costs to travel to Madeira for 5 days. We traveled as a couple and these costs are per person. There’s also a few additional costs as our flight home was delayed a day due to bad weather.

🚎TRANSPORT: £265.21 // €314.12
We hired a car for the whole trip, mostly fine but broke down on day 2 the other side of island so had to go get a new one (best insurance I’ve ever seen and very good price) We also took a taxi to the airport after dropping the car off. Our flight ended up being delayed so had to get a bus from the airport and an uber back.

🏨ACCOMMODATION: £258.28 // €305.91
We stayed in a mix of accommodations as we traveled around the island. We had a cheap airbnb on night 1, followed by 3 hotels around the island (and an extra hotel when the flight was delayed). The hotel in Funchal was very nice with a great view for the last few days.

🍕FOOD: £193.82 // €229.56
We only went out for dinner 3 or 4 nights, being too busy with hikes or tired on the others. We spent plenty on snacks for the road trips and hikes, stopping at a few places for a quick lunch, and having a few drinks. The most expensive food was from the airport. We also bought a lot of water!

✈️FLIGHTS: £138.05 // €163.51
We flew with Ryanair from Stansted but went on to see friends in Lisbon after, so this is an approximate for return flights. Our flight leaving was actually delayed due to the weather. Madeira has one of the most dangerous airports in the world because of how small the runway is!
🌊ACTIVITIES: £145.46 // €172.29The great thing about Madeira is there’s so much to see for free with some stunning hikes and great landscapes. Other than hikes like Pico Ruivo and São Lourenço, we did a dolphin boat tour, swam in the natural rock pools, and paragliding over the island.
🪙OTHERS: £10.96 // €12.98
This just covers a few minor costs like parking, tips, and souvenirs - continuing my pin badge collection.
