Scientist Stories: Elsa Logarinho, Chromosomal Instability and Aging

Elsa Logarinho concluded her PhD in Biomedical Sciences by the University of Porto (UP) in 2002. Under supervision of C.E. Sunkel at IBMC/UP, and short-term rotations at C. González lab/EMBL, she studied the Polo/Plk1 and BubR1 mitotic kinases in Drosophila, originally reporting Polo localization at kinetochores (J Cell Sci 1998) and that distinct mitotic checkpoint proteins respond differently to microtubule occupancy at kinetochores (J Cell Sci 2004). After her PhD, E. Logarinho pursued an academic path as full-time Assistant Professor, first at ISCS-N/CESPU (2002-2007) and then at Medical School/University of Minho (2007-2009). During this period, she co-authored 9 papers in different scientific areas (Mitosis, Machado-Joseph disease and infection) (2007- 2011). In 2009, E. Logarinho changed to a full-time research path under the ‘Ciência 2008’ program, joining H. Maiato lab at IBMC. Her work on mechanisms ensuring mitotic spindle-pole integrity (Nat Cell Biol 2012, 2014) was acknowledged with the Pfizer 2011 and SPGH 2013 prestigious national prizes. In 2013, she was awarded a Junior Researcher position funded by ON.2/QREN/FEDER to launch innovative research lines at IBMC (now part of the i3S Consortium/UP). In 2015, she was highly recommended by the IBMC External Advisory Board for an independent research group status, and simultaneously awarded with an FCT Investigator competitive grant.
