Описание к видео BOLIYAN - Dalbar Singh ║ BackPack Studio™ (Season 2) ║ Indian Folk Music - Punjab

Boliyan or Bolis are couplets that are sung in Punjab. A Boli expresses typical situations and their emotions. Usually, a boli is sung and introduced by one woman, and then other girls form a chorus.
These boliyan are usually passed down generation by generation orally. This forms a continuous and successive chain, each generation being taught by its predecessor. It is through this process that boliyan have been refined and passed on from long ago.

Lyrics -

Char gyi janj chathheyan to sajke
(The wedding procession is ready)

Gidda payi nach ke mundeya
(Dance and do ‘gidda’)

Chhadi naa koi khami
(Leave no stone unturned)

Nachna kudna chah hai man da
(Dancing and merry making are all desires of the heart)

Satgur bhar de hami
(May the almighty give his blessings)

Je na melan aayi giddech
(If ‘melan’ would not participate in the dance)

Ho jaungi badnami
(It will be embarrassing )

Gidda tan payiye nachche munde di mami
(Gidda will be performed if the boy’s aunt join in)

Firdi melan ghaghra bhaldi
(‘Melan’ is looking for a gown)

Ghaghra naa koi thyaave
(But she couldn’t find one)

Ghaghraa thyageya naala hai ni
(She gets a gown but there is no draw-string)

Naale than ki pave
(What shall she use in its place)

Naala thya gya pori lae ki
(When she finds a draw-string and a needle)

Baithi naala pave
(She sits downs to sew it in)

Do pal sabr karo
(Wait a few moments)

Aayi melan vich gidde de
(‘Melan ’ has come to take part in gidda)

Pariyan varga roop naar da
(Like the fairies, is the beauty of the woman)

Mag di jyon angeyaari
(Like a blazing flame)

Dove nain kataran varge
(Eyes like daggers)

Vich kajle di dhari
(Lined with kohl)

Jovan mehk reha
(Her youth is wafting)

Jyon kesar di kyaari
(Just like the fragrance of saffron)

Aithe hi dakka lade
(Stop arguing now)

Tera keha kade je moda
(That I will refuse to do what you might say)

Dil jo bharm gavade
(Put this misunderstanding out of your heart)

Pehlan khedeyan vich pangoore
(First he played in a rocker chair/swing for toddlers)

Chadeya fer kandere
(Then on the shoulders of his elders)

Much futti jad chaddi jawani
(When he got young)

Budda hoya baith manje te
(In old age, he is now bed ridden)

Farke mala fere
(Telling his rosary)

Hoja godaniye bale baba tere
(something like he enters his second childhood)

Jyondeya vich ne lok oho jo
(Among the living are those people who)

Hass ke sama langaunde
(Spend their time laughing)

Gam gusse to bach ke rehnde
(They stay away from despair and anger)

Geet pyaar de gaunde
(And sing songs of love)

Kahi suni da bura na man de
(Neither do they get upset with the hearsay)

Nak te gussa naa lyonde
(Nor do they get angry easily)

Eh din shagna de roz roz ni aunde
(These auspicious days don’t come daily)

Aaya son mahina pyaara
(Here comes the month of saavan)

Ghata kaliyan chhayiyan
(Dense black clouds have gathered)

Mor papihe koyalan kookan
(The peacocks, cuckoos are all cooing)

Yada teriyan aayiyan
(Your memories have resurfaced)

Dil mere nu dobun pained
(My heart is pained)

Mahi naa aaya likh likh chhitiyan payiyan
(My partner has not come back, despite the letters I wrote)

Je hove tu mehndi boota
(If you were a plant of ‘heena')

Vich bag de lavan
(I would plant you in the gardens)

Aale dwaale phul lagake
(With flower all around)

Tainu ghera paava
(I will surround you)

Tod ke patte tere mitra
(Taking your leaves, I would)

Ragad tali te lavan
(Crush them and put them on my palms)

Tu alag baithi khunje
(But you prefer sitting separate)

Kale bhor da chit ni lagda
(I don’t feel happy being on my own)

Suni haveli gunje
(The house seems empty)

Keda mere bhande maanju
(Who will help me with my chores?)

Kon aangan nu hunje
(Who will look after my house?)

Laike jaunga moti bagh diye kuje(bird)
(I will take you with me, you are the bird of my house)

Mere khoon di saahi baliye
(With my blood as the ink)

Mere hath lekhala
(Have me write it down)

Tetu ni main mukh lukaunda
(I will not shy with you)

Saare zindgi kathhe rehna
(Our entire lives, we will live together)

So satgur di khala
(Swear by the almighty)

Bebe aakhe sun ni pyaaro
(A mother tells her daughter)

Pyaar pyaar na kariye
(Don’t fall in love)

Par ke chaar jamatan avien
(After having studied a few classes in school)

Uchi baan naa dhariye
(Don’t consider yourself to be too wise)

Gau gariban vangu rahiye
(Live like a humble person)

Boch boch pab dhariye
(Careful at every step)

Je babul khu dhakka deve
(if your father makes you do something against your wishes)

O v hass ke jariye
(Accept it with a smile)

Maniye maa peya di, haan de haan vich bhariye paayiye
(Listen to your parents, accept what they say!)

Bas karo oye mundeyo
(Now stop lads)

Bhog gidde da payiye
(Let’s complete this gidda)
