Massage therapists focusing on the hamstrings should understand the anatomy of the three muscles in this group: the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. The biceps femoris has two heads, one originating from the ischial tuberosity and the other from the femur, both inserting into the head of the fibula. The semitendinosus arises from the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the medial surface of the tibia at the prs anserinus. Lastly, the semimembranosus originates from the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the posterior medial condyle of the tibia.
Clients who are more prone to hamstring injuries include athletes engaging in activities with sudden accelerations or decelerations, as well as individuals with poor flexibility. When working on the hamstrings, massage therapists can employ specific techniques like pin & stretch. Active & passive range of motion, trigger point therapy and techniques like effleurage, petrissage, and stretching to improve flexibility, enhance blood circulation, and alleviate tension in these muscles.
Treating the Sacro tuberous ligament is beneficial to treatment of the hamstrings.
