The CSX Mountain Subdivision which runs between Cumberland MD and Parkersburg WV is one of the steepest mainline grades in the east averaging between 2%-3% in sections between Grafton and Terra Alta. Due to majority of traffic being coal and the steep grade, helper sets are called out to help shove the heavy trains over the hill. Even with 5 AC gevos in a 2-1-2 power configuration, its still a struggle to take a 100 car train to the top.
