VIDEO CONTENTS:
[0:00] Introduction
I collected 45 g dandelion blossums around the neighborhood.
Presoak 500 g of yarn: 2 skeins Swish DK, 2 skeins WOTA worsted, 5- 20 g minis (DK platinum)
[1:51] Mordanting plan & protocol from EarthHues
[3:56] Setting up the alum bath
A couple of inches of water in the pot. Heat it up. Dissolve 100 g of Aluminum Sulfate in the hot water
[6:46] Add the yarn to the pot
It took a couple of hours to reach 200 degrees F. Leave the yarn in the pot for one hour at temp.
[8:13] Setting up the dandelion extraction
45 g dandelion, 4 cups of water
[9:17] Remove mordanting fiber from the heating element, start heating dandelion extraction. Let the dandelions cook for about an hour or so.
[10:15] remove the dandelion from the heat and let it cool until I can handle it.
The plan: Split the extract in half and place in 2 mason jars. Add 20 g mordanted yarn to one, 20 g just presoaked in plain tap water to the other. See what happens!
[11:13] Helping the mordanted fibers cool off
Remove the liquid, but don't wash the yarn before this project.
[13:26] Preparing the dandelion mason jars
[16:20] Double boiler to heat set the dandelion color
[17:25] observations while heating (40 min in, then 1h 40 min)
remove from heat. Leave lid on and let the yarn cool slowly.
[19:11] Removing the jars from the pot
I added an extra knot onto one of the ties from the NO MORDANT jar
[21:32] Washing the yarn
[23:14] The finished dry yarn and conclusions
