Advising and High Impact Practices: Partnerships for Engagement

High Impact Practices have been shown to improve student outcomes from time-to-degree, sense of belonging, and career outcomes. In this session we will discuss how academic advising plays a vital role in connecting students, departments, and faculty in creating, offering, and engaging in these opportunities. The workshop will leverage the experiences of the hosts and all attendees’ experiences to discuss how advising partnerships are critical in developing, supporting, and realizing the potential of these programs.

Outside of the classroom, often the only required interactions students have at the institution are with Academic Advisors. Leveraging these meetings, Academic Advisors are critical for fostering environments that support student engagement beyond degree plans and course schedules. Advisors can serve as agents of engagement, linking students to academic and career development experiences beyond the classroom and developing the necessary partnerships with faculty and departments in their creation.

This hosted discussion will look at a few exemplar models of High Impact Practices and generate discussion with workshop participants to explore how these programs are developed and supported, how partnerships are created, and how to encourage student engagement.
