1962: Cuban Missile Crisis: Street Interviews with Londoners

On 23 October 1962, ITN's Nick Barker asked Londoners what they thought of President Kennedy's actions regarding the Soviet placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba.

The day before, on 22 October, Kennedy had made a televised address in which he announced that the US navy would begin enforcing "a strict quarantine on all offensive military equipment under shipment to Cuba". In the same address, Kennedy stated explicitly that it was US policy "to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack by the Soviet Union on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union."

As is captured in this short set of interviews with members of the public, some believed Kennedy was right to stand up to Soviet Union, while others believed his words and actions were a dangerous escalation and made confrontation more likely.
