Chris Threlkeld Visit | Joseph Conyers, Double bass

Owner of Heartland String Bass Shop in Iowa City, Iowa, Chris Threlkeld is a luthier and repairer of double basses. He is in the process of making his second cello and will soon be making electric basses and electric guitars.


Chris has produced fantastic basses that are played all around the country, many of which are currently played in major symphony orchestras, such as the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, and more.


Chris came to Philly, along with a bunch of other cities, back in October with his 47th bass! William Valencia and Zacharie Small of Temple University, along with myself, got to play this bass and it is incredible! It’s beautifully crafted along with his new “stealth” tailpieces which have had a very positive response on many basses.


We went to dinner that night and Chris had some really great insight into making basses and creating art. He creates basses that he wants to create, and if he tried to please every single person, he would never finish an instrument.


As an artist, you will never be able to appeal to every person who consumes your art, and that’s ok! Making art is about taking all of the information that you have gotten thus far, and using it to create something that is unique to you.
