With “Mensho”(麺匠) noodle experts preparing fresh batches of noodles and dashi broth daily, Marugame Seimen, Japan’s largest udon chain, mimics the authentic taste of Japan’s Sanuki udon (said to be the first and most famous udon in the country) and is so highly rated that you can find one of its 800 stores in every corner of Japan and over 250 stores globally, but somehow this is our first time trying it! We’ve tried udon noodles in Sanuki in Kagawa “Udon Prefecture”, so now it’s time to really put Marugame to the test. What to eat
We ordered the basic of the basic udon (thick wheat flour noodles) with a hot kake udon, かけうどん (soup noodle udon), and a cold bukkake udon, ぶっかけうどん (cold udon noodles served in a more concentrated broth) both in the large size for under $10 (¥550 + ¥40 container fee each). That’s just $7.80 for two huge authentic udon dishes!

The best part, though, is that you can pick up unlimited toppings of negi (green onion), grated ginger, and fried tempura batter bits for free to complete your meal! Even if you’re in a pinch and looking for a budget dinner in Japan, it’s possible to eat like a local and enjoy the taste of Sanuki udon (said to be Japan’s original and most famous udon) from the comfort of your own home.

You can of course go big and order one of Marugame Seimen’s various tempura toppings like shrimp, squid, and veggies or try a meat or curry udon to spice things up a bit if you’re feeling more adventurous!
