This is a Chinese-style song written by famous Taiwanese singer Jay Chou. It describes a sad true love story that happened in what is now China about 1500 years ago.

He met a local girl, and the two fell in love at first sight and made a private agreement for life. Unexpectedly, the enemy invaded, and the general was ordered to go fight. Before the expedition, he held the girl's hand and said: I will definitely come back to marry you after I win the battle.
The girl watched reluctantly at the city gate as the general rode away on his horse.
A few months after the general set out on the expedition, the Song Dynasty retreated steadily, and the emperor beheaded two of the defeated generals in a fit of anger, but the Song Dynasty was still defeated, and Luoyang City fell.
The seriously injured general hid in a temple, and when his injuries recovered, he would have returned to the emperor's side, but at this time the Song Dynasty was over, and going back was a dead end. The general was not afraid of death, but he thought of the oath to the girl, in addition, The emperor's slaughter of war generals made him feel chilled, so he had no choice but to devote himself to the temple to be a monk, and return to the girl's side when the wars subsided one day.
Just at the city gate of their farewell, there was a woman who sat on a stone slab every day. Whenever someone came back from the battlefield, she would go forward to ask if there was any news about the general. Although the answer was negative, the general never returned from the battlefield. But she never give up to wait day after day, year after year.
This story was passed on from ten, ten to thousands, and finally, it reached the general who became a monk in the temple, but the war was still going on at this time, for survive, he had to wait until the end of the war...
Many years have passed, and the war is finally over! The general walked out of the temple and went back to the place he missed day and night. The general dressed as a civilian and came to the dilapidated gate of the city. He walked to the place where they separated, beside the withered tree, and stroked the slate where the woman sat waiting for him to come back every day. People told him that there used to be a woman here who sat on this slate every day waiting for her beloved to return.
The general could not find any trace of the woman in this dilapidated city, but he believed she had been waiting for him. At this moment, an old man came and told him that she had been alone until the day she died. The general returned to the temple again and sat quietly knocking on the wooden fish.
