Based on the IMV platform, the Toyota Fortuner is an SUV with a body-on-frame design. This platform and the engine choices are shared by the Hilux and the Innova, but with different outputs. The updated Fortuner has a sleeker design than its predecessor, and customers may choose between a sportier and more robust LTD trim that comes in 4x2 or 4x4 options.

The Fortuner has seven seats inside, and its third-row seats can be folded to the side to provide extra room for goods. Better facilities are another benefit of the Fortuner over the vehicles it shares a platform with.

Regarding the chassis, the Fortuner comes with a multilink system up front and a double-wishbone suspension system in the rear. With their full independence, both suspension systems offer an improved ride. Other than that, you should anticipate vented disc brakes on all sides and wheels that measure either 17 inches for G versions or 18 inches for V variants and above. A machine-cut finish allows the LTD trim to use a special set of 18-inch wheels. The Fortuner's top-tier 4x4 trims are equipped with a differential lock, auto disconnect differential, and downhill assist control as standard equipment.

A new set of monotube shock absorbers and damper adjustments were part of the suspension changes the Japanese carmaker made for the Toyota Fortuner GR-S.

The 2016 Toyota Fortuner G Variant rides similarly to the vehicle before the makeover. The new 2020 model's ride comfort is passably decent on bumpy roads and mediocre pavement because it is still built on a ladder-frame chassis. The 2.4-liter diesel engine has sufficient torque at lower rpm levels, contributing to its strong engine performance. The best feature of the Fortuner is its excellent NVH insulation, which blocks out most noise from entering the cabin. The 6-speed automatic transmission likewise operates smoothly with barely noticeable gear changes.

All Toyota models come standard with a 7 or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While a backup camera is standard on Fortuner G models, models V and higher will come equipped with Toyota's Panoramic View camera. A 9-speaker JBL audio system will be included with the Fortuner's top of the line levels to improve the listening experience. Aside from that, proximity sensors will come standard on all models. V models and above come equipped with wireless charging, USB ports, automatic temperature control, cruise control, and keyless entry with push start as standard features.

Airbags for the driver, front passenger, and knees will be standard equipment on all Fortuner versions. The highest trim level, the LTD, adds driver, front passenger, side, curtain shield, and knee airbags, for a total of seven airbags. Additionally, Toyota included Toyota Safety Sense—which includes lane departure alert, pre-collision warning system, and adaptive cruise control—with the LTD models. Additional safety equipment includes child lock doors, a Toyota vehicle security system, an engine immobilizer, a horn, ISOFIX child seat anchors, driver and front passenger seatbelt reminders, traction control, hill-start assist control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, and 3-point seatbelts for all occupants.
