惠州市，簡稱惠，別稱鵝城，歷史上曾有包括蘇東坡在內的不少名人旅居於此，留下大量題詠惠州的詩詞，因而使惠州積累了深厚的人文底蘊。惠州市是珠三角經濟圈的9個地級市之一，惠州被定義為第二線城市。
隋文帝開皇十年（591年），嶺南設立廣州和循州兩總管府，循州總管府的府治，即在今惠州市的中山公園內，從此惠州成為東江流域的政治、經濟和文化中心。隋煬帝大業三年（607年），循州總管府改為龍川郡。 917年，劉䶮建立南漢，惠州為南漢禎州郡的郡治。
北宋宋真宗天禧四年（1020年）為太子趙禎避諱，改禎州為惠州，始有「惠州」之稱，並一直沿用到今天。北宋紹聖元年（1094年），蘇遼在59歲時被朝廷四降官職，貶至寧遠軍節度副使，惠州安置。

惠州遠在7,000萬年前是一片陸地沼澤地帶，適合恐龍的生存，近年來，在惠州全境曾發現過4批38枚的恐龍蛋化石和一些恐龍的足跡。
惠州市地處客語、粵語、閩語三大漢語變體的交會區，三種漢語變體在境內均有分佈。
惠州市是工業化城市，工業增加值連續多年占到國內生產毛額的一半以上，為三大產業之頭。
惠州市工業最有潛力的產業則為石油化工業，在惠州市的大亞灣經濟技術開發區，建成和在建石化項目共有15個，總投資730多億元人民幣，其中投資額超過100億元人民幣的項目有兩個，分別是中海殼牌南海石化計畫和中海油1,200萬噸煉油計畫。
2023年惠州GDP大灣區排名第5.深圳、廣州、佛山、東莞、惠州，奈何只有東莞（1,1438億元）一半不到（5,639億元）

Huizhou City, referred to as Hui, is also known as Goose City. The seat of Xunzhou General Administration Office was located in Zhongshan Park in Huizhou City today. In the third year of Daye (607) of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, Xunzhou General Administration Office was changed to Longchuan County. In 917, Liu Qian established the Southern Han Dynasty, and Huizhou was the county seat of Zhenzhou County of the Southern Han Dynasty.
In the fourth year of Tianxi (1020) of Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, in order to avoid the taboo of Crown Prince Zhao Zhen, Zhenzhou was changed to Huizhou, and it was called "Huizhou" and has been used until today. In the first year of Shaosheng in the Northern Song Dynasty (1094), Su Shi was demoted four times by the court at the age of 59, and was demoted to the deputy envoy of Ningyuan Army Jiedushi, and settled in Huizhou.

The most promising industry in Huizhou is the petrochemical industry. In the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone of Huizhou, there are 15 petrochemical projects completed and under construction, with a total investment of more than 73 billion yuan. Among them, there are two projects with an investment of more than 10 billion yuan, namely the CNOOC Shell Nanhai Petrochemical Project and the CNOOC 12 million tons of refining project.
