DuPont Cars

On this episode of My Classic Car, Dennis heads to Wilmington, DE to check out a couple rare, stately, and in some ways menacing, concourse quality DuPont cars from the Dupont Estate, a '29 Speedster Model G and a '31 Model H.
The Model G is a wild looking car. Sleek, but sits up awful high. Even the running boards. Equipped with the thin beamed "anti-aircraft" headlights, it is accompanied in theme by a Dupont commissioned cannon as the hood ornament on it's long nose. It's one big car for two people, and only one door, so you'd better be comfortable with your passenger. Powered by an 8 cylinder continental engine and dual carbs that the others didn't have, this one's pushing around 40 HP. So it's the "hot rod" of the two. Also a fairly shrouded and clean looking engine.
Stepping up a few years, the '31 Model H Phaeton exudes class and means. Just look at the hood ornament! Much bigger that the G, the design is just gorgeous. This one was specifically built for the 1931 Auto Show and the last car they built, actually in the Indian Motorcycle Factory. Beautiful lines in the metal work, accentuated by the two tone paint, and with the top up it looks fast sitting still. With a far more elegant dash, it's simply more polished in all respects. Even in the Continental Straight 8, it's just a bit more polished and just a bit prettier.
Dupont may be long gone, but the cars are unforgettable.
