Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula was a Zambian nationalist who was part of the movement for the independence of Northern Rhodesia, as Zambia was then called. He was born on the 15th of January 1916  as the youngest and only son out of three children in the village of Maala. Nkumbula went to the Methodist mission schools for his formal education and in 1934 completed Standard VI at the Kafue Training Institute. He then served as a teacher in Namwala District for several years.
In 1938 Nkumbula joined the Northern Rhodesian government as a teacher. It was during World War II he became involved in African nationalist politics which at the time was the trend with many other educated Africans.
