Danny Elfman began his career as a theatrical performer and street musician before becoming the front man of an idiosyncratic rock band (Oingo Boingo) and finally transitioning to become one of the most prolific and recognized film composers of his time. His many musical adventures have led to him creating music in all sorts of genres and configurations — but Danny Elfman didn't actually play any musical instruments, or know how to read or notate music, until he had finished high school. After graduating, he started learning to play the violin and took the instrument with him on a yearlong trip around the world, which included a short tour with French cabaret performance troupe The Grand Magic Circus. From there, he visited West Africa and began studying the balafon, an instrument that inspires him to this day and the style of which he incorporates in his Percussion Quartet.
