► After their wedding in 1947 the Royal couple moved to the island of Malta, where Prince Philip was posted by the Royal Navy. They were known then as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

Before Elizabeth became Queen, and Philip her consort, they lived as naval officer and wife.

And as our Royal Correspondent Simon Vigar explains, they enjoyed freedoms seldom possible in later years.
