CCIR Student Spotlights: Rui on Political Representation in Modernizing Islamic States: UAE

Rui Yang is a student at the American School of Dubai in the UAE and a member of the National Honor Society, which fosters leadership, service, character, and scholarship. She also served as a guest speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Dinner, organised by Democrats Abroad at the Nieuwspoort of the Dutch Parliament, where she spoke about her experiences with racism and Asian hate, particularly during the pandemic.

Rui's research experience includes participating in the "Global Scholars: Global Issues and Challenges" programme at Notre Dame University and the "Expository Writing Intensive: How to Write Great Papers" Summer Immersion Programme at Columbia University.

At the CCIR Academy, Rui's research project, "Political Representation in Modernizing Islamic States: A Case Study of the United Arab Emirates," examines how political representation functions in Islamic states undergoing modernisation, focusing on the UAE. Her study explores the balance between traditional Islamic governance and modern political structures.

Rui’s recognition at the CCIR Academy highlights her commitment to research, with appreciation for the guidance provided by her professor and the academy.
