THE ORIGIN OF TSWANA DYNASTIES

Описание к видео THE ORIGIN OF TSWANA DYNASTIES

The establishment of Tswana dynasties came about a result of a breakaway from the Tswana-Sotho group in the 17th century. Oral traditions explain these migrations as responses to drought or junior brothers breaking away to become independent chiefs. The three brothers Kwena, Ngwaketse and Ngwato broke away from their father Chief Malope, to establish their own followings in Molepolole, Kanye and Serowe respectively.

Oral tradition teaches that Ngwaketse was the first to establish his own tribe and set his Kgotla which forced his elder brother brothers to establish their own as Tswana believes are against such setup, other records states the Tswana dynasties started growing when Kwena and Hurutshe migrants founded the Ngwaketse chiefdom among Khalagari-Rolong in south eastern Botswana by 1700. After 1750 this grew into a powerful military state controlling Kalahari hunting and cattle raising and copper production west of Kanye. Meanwhile other Kwena had settled around Molepolole and a group of those Kwena henceforth called Ngwato broke away from their elder brother to further north at Shoshong. By about 1770 a group of Ngwato called the Tawana had even settled as far north west as Lake Ngami a region occupied by Yeyi.
