Green pool water is not the only sign of an algae bloom. Many times the walls will first turn green or discolored. This can be mistaken for normal staining, or another type of discoloration.

If your swimming pool walls turn a different color, seemingly overnight, the first thing to do is to test your pool chemical readings. In this case, we have low levels or sanitizer (chlorine) and no stabilizer (CYA). This combination, along with a higher pH level, can be the first sign of your pool's capacity to have an algae bloom.
