Hi, I'm Kelli, a licensed and certified pediatric speech language pathologist and owner of Speedy Speech, LLC. I have worked alongside pediatric behavioral specialists, RBTs, ABA therapists, behavioral early interventionist and today I'm sharing my TOP tips for helping parents deal with TODDLER TANTRUMS! (specifically for children with speech and language delays)

For Parents - WHAT TO DO ABOUT TODDLER TANTRUMS and NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS (Toddler Hitting, Kicking, Biting and Screaming!)

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

ALL behaviors have a FUNCTION or a REASON that they are happening, even if they seem "random" they may be triggered by communication deficits, sensory needs, input, scarcity or overload, to get something, or to get out of something!

Using a FUNCTION behavior chart (ABC chart) will help you to determine WHEN and WHY this is happening and any TRIGGERS that may be causing the tantrum, meltdown, or breakdown!

Instead of telling a child to STOP! NO! or hitting back, we want to determine WHY (the function) the behavior is happening and then provide a REPLACEMENT strategy!

This therapy technique is a modified ABA approach.

HOW TO DECREASE OR ELIMINATE THE BEHAVIOR:
#1: Determine the Function of the behavior
#2: Ignore NEGATIVE Behaviors; Give attention to POSITIVE behaviors
#3: Model Replacement Behaviors
