Описание к видео More than just colour! 🌈✨Your guide to picking paint!! 🎨

When it comes to choosing paint colours most people focus only on the colour but every pigment is completely unique & there’re many other really important things to consider so your paint works for you.

Here are some things to consider:

TRANSPARENCY 👻
In this video I compare Venetian red with transparent oxide red (they are exact same pigment). I also compare crimson lake & cadmium red (different pigments but very similar colours). You can see that even though both paint colours have a very similar hue, the differences in their transparency make them behave very different to each other.

The transparent colours are ideal for classical, indirect painting techniques like glazing where the idea is to build up transluscent layers so the light can shine through & bounce back off the canvas.
Opaque colours are good if you’re using impressionistic, direct painting techniques where you’ll need higher coverage.

TINTING STRENGTH 💪
This means how powerful a color is mixed with other paints. Phthalo Blue, has a really high tinting strength, you only need a little bit for it to start influencing a mix & it will even stain your brushes, great if your mixing bold colours but if you want to have more control & mix subtle natural colours, like you might for portraiture, you’ll prefer a mineral colour like Prussian blue which is a similar hue but has a lower tinting strength.

PERMANENCE & LIGHTFASTNESS ☀️
This is a colour’s ability to resist fading over time. Each paint colour has a permanence rating on the tube. You can google the rating system to understand the rating if you’re confused. Most paints are pretty good bug alizarin crimson has one of the lowest permanence ratings on the modern palette. If you want to a similar colour thats more archival, use permanent alizarin crimson which uses a modern quinacradone pigment made initially for car manufacturing that’s much longer lasting.

CONSISTENCY 📏
The consistency of every colour is different & you’ll prefer some to others based on your style & technique. It’s even true that same colour/pigment can feel different in different brands based the different ways they process the pigment & the oil they use. Some paint is thick & buttery & some is more fluid.

Artists who like thick, impasto, impressionist techniques, will prefer heavier paints & artists who prefer smooth, thin layers with fine detail & less brushstrokes will prefer softer, more fluid paints that you can use straight out the tube.

✨✨✨

The key takeaway here is that while the color of a paint is important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. It’s important to know who u are as a painter & what you want from your paint. You can find all the info about these characteristics on the paint tube or look up the paint online on the brand’s website before you buy if you want to be really informed about your purchase!
