Newport to Fishguard - Wales Coast Path

Section 31 of the Wales Coast Path - Jan and Don set out from Newport en-route to the final destination for this trip – Fishguard. The lads recount the minor folk festival coming from the tent next door and Jan moans about expensive chips before walking through stunning cliff scenery.

After failing to attract the attention of a posh boater, the beautiful inlet of Aber Rhigian appears from nowhere, as does the bay at Aber Fforest with its beautifully proportioned lime kiln and now defunct curious internet history.

Upwards once again with views of Ynys Dinas coming into view, and then a road walking descent into Cwm-Yr-Eglwys with its fascinating church remains perched atop a sea wall where a Harold Lloyd lookalike is encountered taking some beauty shots.

Today is the hottest day of the trip without a cloud in the sky, so the lads take the lower mobility friendly route to bypass Ynys Dinas where they emerge at the Captain’s Inn which is shut. Feeling quite thirsty by now they tackle the next ascent.

Once on top, views forward to Fishguard are offered and the lads stumble onto a campsite where a welcome drink is provided by a site tap – but wait, around the corner is a shop where soleros are eaten on bench of the day whilst watching the ferry depart.

Back on the trail it is all up and down again with Jan heavy breathing before getting his leg over. After navigating the top of exotic coves with hidden beaches the lads take another deserved break on the beach at Pwll Landdau.

A deviation up to Fishguard Fort follows to see the cannons and then the first encounter with cars and civilisation for a while at Lower Town, where a film plaque and another bench is found. The lads are so tired now in this heat and the weeks-worth of walking has now caught up with them.

Now reduced to hobbling around the headland footpath, they take in views of the harbour walls before finally descending the steps down to their final destination – a lamp post. Celebration ensues with a 3 hour bus ride back up the coast for a celebratory dinner. Job done!
