The New Renault 5 Electric Is More Important Than You Think

The new Renault 5 may not seem like much, it's an upcoming relatively affordable electric hatchback. It is much more than that. In my opinion, its the first cheap and cheerful car we have gotten in a very long time.

Due to it's cutesy appearance, low price of £25,000 (starting) and electric powertrain this car will sell very well. In fact, 50,000 people have already signed up before anything has really been revealed about it just yet.

Even though it's electric, car enthusiasts across the world have fallen in love with its retro styling and well designed interior. Although, considering it is harking back to a car which enthusiasts love (the OG Renault 5) it really is no wonder why people like it so much.

Especially when Alpine, the creators of the A110, are making a hot hatch version called the A290. Which will be revealed on the 13th of June 2024. No power figures have been released yet, but expect 200 and a bit horsepower and it being driven through the front wheels. It's a shame it's not RWD like the Renault 5 Turbo, but considering the OG Renault 5 Alpine was FWD, it makes sense for the new one to be also. Not to mention that FWD is just cheaper and less complicated than RWD, and it would cost too much to re-engineer the R5 electric's chassis to make it suit a mid engine RWD layout. Pushing that to one side, it's likely the Alpine A290 will be the first proper electric hot hatch, so it sure is exciting!

The Renault 5 comes with two battery options - a 40kWh battery that has a range of up to 186 miles, and a 52kWh battery with a range of up to 249 miles-which I suspect is the one everyone will buy. There are also three motor options, with the entry-level delivering 95hp, while the range-topper puts down 150hp, which again is the one everyone will go for...
