For over a year, Japanese consumers have adored the Nissan X-Trail compact SUV with e-Power series hybrid technology; yet, the American Nissan Rogue still depends entirely on gasoline-powered engines to fulfill its demands. Since the upcoming Rogue may come with an upgraded powertrain in a few years, MotorTrend seized the chance to spend some time in Japan riding in the X-Trail.Since 2000, the Nissan X-Trail has been sold in Japan; the third generation model was marketed as the Nissan Rogue in the United States. The e-Power series hybrid system, which is available in Europe and Japan but has not made its way to the Rogue in North America, powers the current fourth-generation X-Trail.In 2016, Nissan debuted the e-Power series hybrid system on the compact automobile, the Note, in Japan. The X-Trail is equipped with a second generation e-Power electric drive system, which combines an electric motor and a gasoline engine. Instead of powering the wheels, the engine charges the battery by acting as a generator and directing current through an inbuilt inverter, which enables the motor to turn the wheels. Drivers may now enjoy EVs without having to worry about running out of gas.The X-Trail essentially feels just like it does on paper: it accelerates with the immediate torque of an EV, stops, and drives like a Rogue. With sufficient of power that is smoothly provided for city driving, the e-Power system feels like it is suitable for American roads. We ended up on the Haneda Airport expressway after making a mistake at a complex crossroads, which added extra freeway time—a crucial factor for the North American market. Similar to the Rogue in the US, which requires a bit more time to start and whose engine becomes noisier as power increases, the X-Trail is more than sufficient as a cruiser even though it lacks considerable power.
