(23 Dec 1975) 7551: LAOS: THE COMMUNISTS TAKE OVER

24 mins (English synch: 2 mins 8 secs)

On December 4th 1975 the Pathet Lao Communists in
Laos achieved the final victory of their 20-year
struggle for power when they dismantled the neutralist
government of Prince Souvanna Phouma, abolished
the monarchy and proclaimed a people's Democratic
Republic. The new regime, led by Premier Kaysone
Phomivan and President Souphanouvong, declared
that self-reliance and discipline would be the qualities
needed to rebuild Laos. Their chief tool in remodelling
the state is the political seminar which all must attend.
Russian aid is also increasing. The takeover drove
thousands into exile and increased tension with
Thailand. This report looks at life in Laos now against
the background of events since 1962.
