(4 Jan 1970) RR7001 Laos - Will The Communists Win?

Not far from the battlefields of Vietnam another war is
being fought in Laos. It's a civil war between the
Royalists and neutralists led by Prince Souvanna
Phouma and the Communist rebels - the Pathet Lao -
led by his half-brother Prince Souvannavory. The
Royal government troops are backed by the
Americans who provide $250 million dollars of
military aid a year and are now flying up to 300 air
sorties a day to bomb Communist positions. The
Pathet Lao forces are re-inforced by 50,000 North
Vietnamese soldiers and it's reported that they've
now taken over running the war from the Pathet Lao.
The communists suffered an important set-back
when Meo tribesmen captured the vital Plain of Jars.
The Americans have increased their air support for
the Royal government forces and it's reported that
some American officers act as military advisers on
the ground. Peter Snow visited Laos to see the war
and talk to some of the Royal Laotian army officers.
