~ Riverview to Fundy National Park ~

At the time of this hike in mid November there was a Tornado watch and a rainfall warning, dumping 60-80mm of rain on my trusty pup and I. The temperatures fluctuated from +18°C (which is wild for being mid November!) on the first day and dropped all the way down to +2°C on the second night! Between the rain and the temperature fluctuation made this hike challenging.. and that is exactly what I was looking for. Creating some challenge and diversity to a relatively easy hike. This was actually my pup, Jasper’s first long distance hike and he was nothing but perfect on the trail and provided great company along the way! This will certainly not be his last long distance adventure with me.

The Dobson Hiking Trail is a 58km thru hike that is a favourite among hikers in the area which can be hiked in either direction starting from the border of the Fundy National Park or Riverview.

** I personally prefer to start in Riverview and continue onto the Dobson Link Trail into the National Park and end at Laverty Falls. This adds a big climactic conclusion and is the best way to end a big hike!

The trail doesnt have much in terms of difficulty, no wild steep hills, no dramatic or dangerous cliffsides. Just an enjoyable and safe nature walk welcoming hikers of all fitness levels to tread its worn path.

In terms of elevation gain/loss.. I had tracked 1576m of elevation gain over the 68kms that I had hiked.

Camping on the Dobson requires no fees or booking and is never difficult to find an empty site along the trail. The sites are not at the same caliber as you would find along the Fundy Footpath, but the sites are large, have firepits, and are often along some form of water source.

The terrain throughout this hike is a combination or muddy, swampy, soupy trail (expect to have wet boots, even in the dry season). The start of the trail is predominantly softwood and pine forest, but the further you get into the big hills there are large stretches of beautiful hardwood forest. The trail is well marked with blue blazes, which make it hard to find yourself off trail. I do recommend getting the trail guidebook if you are someone who likes a lot of detail and information on the trails you hike, which can be purchased at the hikingnb web page.

This is one of New Brunswicks 5 long hiking trails and i certainly recommend you add it to your list! Maybe not in such inclement weather.. but maybe over a sunny weekend instead! The Dobson Trail makes for a good training hike if you plan to hike the Fundy Footpath and if youre feeling extra ambitious, you could combine the Dobson and Fundy Footpath to create an approximate 170km long adventure!

I hope that this video serves as a trail guide and provides motivation for others to get out and explore the lovely Dobson Trail or any hikes in our beautiful Maritimes!

Happy Hiking 🥾
