Today we’re going to be talking about the spider plant - Chlorophytum Comosum and then I’ll be doing a re-pot for it.

The spider plant is an easy species to care for which makes it great for beginners.
Like many houseplants, they originate From South Africa and were first introduced into Europe at the end of the 18th century.

The usual white and green leaf colour we normally associate with spider plants is actually a variegated cultivar, the original plant was entirely green in colour.
It can be propagated by division of the main plant or from the little plantlets that are produced from the long thin branches known as stolons.

So for the care guide:
Sun: Bright indirect sunlight, keep away from hot sunny windows as it will scorch the leaves.
Watering – not fussy, water regularly, test the soil and water when it starts to feel dry. Will tolerate drying out occasionally.

Soil type: normal houseplant mix is fine

Feed monthly in the growing season – spring summer autumn with general houseplant liquid feed.
Pet safe: Yes, the spider plant is actually edible! And so if your cat starts chewing on the leaves it won’t get sick.

Other notes: Susceptible to brown leaf tips, this is quite normal and is due to drying out for too long, low humidity and even a build-up of salts found in tap water. To avoid this you can use filtered water, R.O water, or even the wastewater after cleaning your fish tank, you can use a humidity tray to help raise the humidity and mist your plant regularly but the main thing will be to keep on top of your watering, but it doesn’t really harm the plant if you get a few brown tips you can just snip them off with a pair of scissors to tidy them up a little.

Repot only when pot bound and roots are visible outside of the pot, this plant is quite happy being restricted slightly and it won’t harm it at all.
