In this video, Ms. Emile Nelson discusses the techniques of illustrating ceramic finds in archaeology. She discusses the differences between fragments and rim sherds in pottery reconstruction illustration. She explains that even if someone is not an artist, they can still create a decent pottery drawing by following a formula. She also talks about the regional variations of ceramics illustration and demonstrates how to set up a rim sherd illustration.
She mentions the different categories of ceramics illustration, including sherds, rim sherds, complete vessels, and re-fits. She also discusses the magic tool for illustrating a rim sherd and the purpose of ceramics illustration.
She explains that there are regional specifics when it comes to ceramics illustration. In the UK and most of Europe, the thickness profile view is on the left and the profile outline is on the right. In the United States, the thickness profile view is on the right and the profile outline is on the left.
She demonstrates how to set up a drawing of a rim sherd.
