To insert a table of contents in Microsoft Word, you can do the following:
Place the cursor where you want the table of contents to appear.
Select the References tab.
In the Table of Contents group, click the Table of Contents button.
Select a built-in table from the menu.
To customize the table of contents, click anywhere in the table of contents.
Click the Table of Contents button.
Select Custom Table of Contents.
Select which levels of headings you want to include.
Click OK.
You can also format the text in your table of contents. To do this, you can:
Go to References , Table of Contents Custom Table of Contents.
Select Modify.
In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify.
In the Modify Style pane, make your changes.
Select OK to save changes.
A table of contents gives users an overview of the document's contents and organization. It also allows readers to go directly to a specific section of an on-line document.
