On the second day of her visit to South Africa, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has visited the impoverished Johannesburg township of Alexandra.

Hundreds of cheering school children gathered to give the queen a rousing welcome on Thursday.

A right Royal welcome.

School children sing a traditional song of greeting for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

It was the sort of greeting reminiscent of her last visit to South Africa in 1995, a year after the country shed white minority rule.

After Wednesday's formal arrival ceremony and state banquets, the queen visited Skeen Combined School to look at an adult education programme, which is part of a nationwide effort funded by the British government.

Inside the centre, the queen saw a class of 50 adult literacy tutors learning how to teach adults to read.

The queen's next stop was a visit to Alexandra Oval to watch young black south Africans getting cricket coaching.

The Oval was built on a former rubbish dump with the help of money from Britain.

The queen will now travel to Durban, the Indian Ocean port hosting this year's summit of Commonwealth leaders.

She will inaugurate the summit on Friday.
