Mutable Instruments Plaits as a Drum Machine

Описание к видео Mutable Instruments Plaits as a Drum Machine

In this video, I'm showcasing how the Mutable Instruments Plaits sounds as a drum machine (particularly on kick, snare/clap, and high hats).

I am relying mostly on the Intellijel Steppy and Quadratt to sequence Plaits' algorithm. Overdriven filters and envelope followers help add saturation to the drum sounds and make them more punchy. There's also a helping hand from delays and reverbs, although in later patches I am gating the drum audio so only certain hits have effects applied.

There is percussion support via pinged filters but all of the kick/snare/hat sounds are Plaits.

If you have specific patch questions, leave a comment below!

CHAPTERS:
0:00 PATCH 1
5:47 PATCH 2
10:28 PATCH 3
14:04 PATCH 4
17:29 PATCH 5
22:48 PATCH 6

Patch 1 notes:
Plaits is the primary sound source with a pinged Three Sisters adding a woodblock/rimshot element around 4:15. There is a Toppobrillo Cluster crossfading between the two outputs of Plait, which is running into a Toppobrillo Multifilter 2 in high pass with a lot of drive. A channel of Sport Modulator 2 is used as an envelope follower to control the gain of the Multifilter. Mimeophon is adding clocked ping pong delay and reverb on all of the drums.

Patch 2 notes:
This patch is largely the same as patch 1 but adds a couple of TB-303 samples via Squid Salmple.

Patch 3 notes:
Same Plaits patch as patch 1 but removes the pinged Three Sisters. I added a vocal sample from Squid Sample and a wobbly baseline from a set of Mannequins modules (Mangrove into Three Sisters with Just Friends on envelope duties, Pamela’s New Workout on clocked LFOs).

Patch 4 notes:
More of the above patch but I’m not sending the kicks and snares to Mimeophon. This creates more atmosphere while helping the kick/snare not get lost.

Patch 5 notes:
This patch uses two Plaits (one for kick, one for snare and high hats). Both run into a crossfader and then into their own channels of Blades for overdrive and high pass filtering. The snare/hat output is output in parallel into Three Sisters and FX Aid to give the phaser-y reverb. Tides 2 is running in chord mode into Ripples with Beads on delay/reverb duty. Rings is set to 2 operator FM mode to do bass. Squid Salmple is used for the vocal sample.

Patch 6 notes:
Beads is used as a standalone bass voice with reverb and is sidechain ducked by the drums. Two Plaits are used on drums just like the last patch. The parallel effects chain is Three Sisters set up as a formant filter into FX Aid’s reverb to create the “wet cave” sound.
