Olive harvest in the eastern part of Crete, in Zakros

There is no better moment than the moment of collecting the fruits of an entire year! Tree and man work together to produce the precious olive oil. The Historic Good of our land.

Of all the goods that man can ask for, nothing is more satisfying than the fruits of his labor! Olive cultivation and harvest are ancient. In Zakros, every year, this enchanting period of intense work in nature, lasts 3-4 months, accompanied by sweet fatigue and nights in front of the fireplace, to assimilate the images of beauty that the human eyes saw during the day.

The Olive Grove resembles a laid green carpet and our ladies the Οlive Trees, loaded with the most nutritious fruits of the earth. Their juice is a source of evergreen youth. Zakros is a community of 500 dedicated producers who have built their lives around the olive tree. They cultivate Koroneiki variety Olives almost exclusively, with the support of science, the help of nature and the Mediterranean climate with the exceptional microclimate of Eastern Crete.

Zakros is a geographically isolated area, but of historical importance since the Minoan times. The population concentration of the producers in the village and their specialization in olive cultivation, have highlited Zakros as an "Olive Oil Politeia", a community with a constant evolution of knowledge, equipment and procedures, exchange of views and cooperation, since the birth of the Agricultural Cooperative of Zakros, in 1936.

The whole family helps with the “liomazoma” (Olive Harvest)! It is also a job that offers income to many farm workers. Vibrating olive harvesting machines that comb the tree with kindness, special nets for olive collection and grass jute sacks or perforated boxes, are our tools! We joyly spend our day in an emerald paradise. In the end, tired and smiling, we take our fruits for common milling to the olive mill and thank nature. We pray for all the people in the world to stay and work in their land, to live by its rich gifts and to share them with their friends. Isn't this happiness?
