Here we have ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by the Folio Society and illustrated by Eric Fraser. The edition I own is a fourth printing from 2001 and it was printed and bound by the Bath Press in the UK.

The book is bound in full vegetable parchment blocked in gold in a design by Francis Mosley.

The sewn binding is however quite tight and hard to keep open, but the St. Pauls Wove paper is of excellent quality. It is thick, has a slightly warm and creamy colour and it still has a pleasant smell after these many years since its production. The text size is a tiny bit smaller than medium.

Eric Fraser’s 19 black & white illustrations for the frontispiece and the chapters are simple and leaves a lot to the imagination, but they are definitely not my favourite Hobbit illustrations. There are also printed map endpapers in black and red.
