Alkali-Silica Reaction: Research Needs and the Link to Practice
Description

Speaker: Dr. Jason H. IDEKER, Professor, Oregon State University, United States

Host: Prof. Karen Scrivener, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland

This presentation will cover alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete with a focus on alkali-silica reaction (ASR). A brief background of the reaction mechanisms and methods to prevent ASR will be covered. The talk will highlight some of the author’s current research and extend to a broader discussion on the research needs to engage the PhD students in the audience. Key references will be provided to enable further self-study or support for ongoing research. The link between accelerated testing methods, field performance and the current state-of-practice will be given. International standards efforts including ASTM and RILEM will support this discussion.

Dr. Jason H. Ideker is a Professor at Oregon State University. He is the Editor-in-Chief of CEMENT and Co-Editor-in-Chief of ASTM’s Advances in Civil Engineering Materials. Dr. Ideker’s main research areas are in service-life of concrete with a focus on early-age behavior of high-performance cementitious materials, prevention and test methods for alkali-silica reaction and durability of calcium aluminate cement systems.

ABOUT RILEM

The mission of RILEM is to advance scientific knowledge related to construction materials, systems and structures and to encourage transfer and application of this knowledge world-wide.

This mission is achieved through collaboration of leading experts in construction practice and science including academics, researchers, testing laboratories and authorities.
