Qingdao (青岛), located in the eastern part of Shandong Province (山东省), China, is a city that boasts a rich history and a vibrant modern life. It is situated on China's Yellow Sea coast and plays a significant role as a major nodal city of the Belt and Road Initiative, connecting Continental and East Asia with Europe. Qingdao is known for having the highest GDP in its province and is administered at the sub-provincial level, covering seven districts and three county-level cities (Jiaozhou, Pingdu, Laixi).

With a population of over 10 million according to the 2020 census, Qingdao is the 15th largest city in China by population. The city's geography includes a beautiful coastline along the Yellow Sea, bordered by Yantai, Weifang, and Rizhao. Qingdao is a major seaport, naval base, commercial, and financial center. It is home to electronics giants like Haier and Hisense. The city's infrastructure includes the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, connecting the main urban area with Huangdao district, and it is famous for its historic German-style architecture and the Tsingtao Brewery, a legacy of the German occupation from 1898 to 1914.

Qingdao's global recognition includes its ranking as the 47th in the 2020 Global Financial Centers Index and being named China's most livable city in 2009. It also hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in 2018 and is rated as a Gamma+ level global city. The city is a hub for global scientific research and education, housing several notable universities like the Ocean University of China and Qingdao University of Science and Technology.

The city's history dates back 6,000 years with the Dongyi people and has seen periods of German and Japanese occupation, which have significantly influenced its development and architecture. Post-World War II, Qingdao has rapidly developed into a modern port city, benefiting from China's open-door policy to foreign trade and investment. Today, Qingdao is not only a key naval base but also a center for manufacturing, high-tech industries, and education, making it a model city for China's future development.
