Located in South Yorkshire is the town of Doncaster.

Its history dates back to around 71 AD when the Romans, under emperor Vespasian, built a fort in the area, calling it Danum. It became a town in 1194 when Richard I granted Doncaster a charter.

Owing to its location and thoroughfare between the north and the south, Doncaster became a key location in the stagecoach trade providing rest for horses and their passengers. This led to horse breeding in the town, and subsequently, the building of Doncaster Racecourse. Racing fans will know this as the venue of the St Leger, one of the five Classics of the flat racing season, taking place each September since 1776.

One of the key landmarks of the town is St George's Minster, commonly referred to as Doncaster Minster. This was built between 1854 and 1858 to replace a much older Norman church which burned down in 1853. The current neo-Gothic church is Grade I listed.

Doncaster was once a key location for coal mining, where the product was transported via the River Don and connecting canals to nearby industrial towns and cities, namely Sheffield, Rotherham and Scunthorpe. A large number of mining jobs were lost in the 1980s due to the closure of coal mines. On a lighter note, butterscotch sweets were invented in Doncaster in the 19th century. They consist of brown sugar cooked to 116 °C/240 °F, mixed with butter and cream.

In the 1960s the Frenchgate Shopping Centre opened. Originally called the Arndale Centre, it was renamed to reflect its location just adjacent to French Gate. In northern towns 'gate' is a common street name suffix, derived from the old Norse, 'gata' as a throwback to the time of the Danelaw that followed the Viking invasions of the 8th and 9th centuries.

Famous people from Doncaster include Jeremy Clarkson, Kevin Keegan and Louis Tomlinson (of One Direction fame... apparently).
