Jacobs led his flight on a dawn patrol, arriving at the front near Merville within minutes. In the distance, they noticed airbursts from friendly anti-aircraft fire (Archie)
and spotted a squadron of R.A.F. S.E.5s approaching their position. Initially, it seemed the S.E.5s had not detected them, as they continued their approach while
maintaining altitude.

Flying his famous black Fokker Dr.I triplane, Jacobs took the lead and initiated the attack. He dove in on the right flank of the "V" formation, selecting the last S.E.5 as his target. Utilizing short bursts from his guns and the maneuverability of his triplane, Jacobs quickly gained the upper hand. His chosen opponent turned out to be none
other than future ace Ira "Taffy" Jones.

Realizing the peril he faced, Jones employed all his skill to evade the relentless attacks of Jacobs, a highly skilled and lethal ace. For several tense minutes, the two danced through the sky, with Jones narrowly avoiding the fire from Jacobs and his wingmates. Finally, leveraging the superior speed of the S.E.5, Jones managed to break free and escape over his lines near the Forest of Nieppe.
