New Command: Jasta 7

Jasta 7 was based at Wynendaeleveld, Belgium, where Jacobs faced a new adversary: British pilots from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Upon his arrival at Jasta 7, Jacobs was suffering from influenza and unable to immediately lead his men in the air. He resumed flying on August 16, witnessing Oberflugmeister Kurt Schoenfelder achieve his second victory.
Jacobs reportedly scored his first victory with Jasta 7 on August 20. Leading a flight of four Albatros aircraft against eight Sopwith Pups of 54 Squadron, Jacobs fired on a Pup that disappeared, with Jastamate Kettle as a witness. However, 54 Squadron’s records confirm the engagement but report no losses. Despite being credited with the victory, modern research suggests that this claim was likely unfounded.
The following day, August 21, Jacobs led a mixed group from Jasta 7 and Jasta 6 against a formation of Spad VIIs (that were later replaced with Sopwith Dolphins) from 19 Squadron and RAF RE8s from 7 Squadron. During the fight, damage to his engine forced Jacobs to return to his home airfield. While landing, he failed to see another aircraft also attempting to land. Both planes were damaged: Jacobs’ aircraft lost its landing gear, but Lt. Kurst’s plane crashed hard, disintegrating and trapping Kurst in the wreckage.
After exiting his own plane, Jacobs attempted to free Kurst but was unable to do so alone. With the help of a local farmer’s wife, they managed to extricate Kurst, who was relatively unharmed but left without his shoes.
