This exquisite cabinet, with panelled doors set into the frames above and below on wooden dowel hinges, is of a type generally referred to as a 'Buddha cabinet', as it would have been made specifically to hold a statue of the Buddha. It would once have featured bright, eye-catching red lacquer doors and panels in contrast to a black top surface. Furthermore, the drawers at the top and bottom would have been painted in bright colours to accentuate the deep carvings. Over time the colours have toned down and the cabinet has developed a timeless, elegant patina that would make it a great addition to any interior.
